How to remove silences and dead air from a video on iPhone
You can trim silences on iPhone by hand in a timeline editor, splitting and deleting each pause, or remove them automatically with an AI editor. In cutzio, select your clips, choose Fast Jump (or Cut the Fluff to also remove filler words), and every pause is removed in about 2–3 minutes.

Dead air is the fastest way to lose viewers on TikTok, Reels and Shorts. Every pause gives people a reason to scroll. Here are three ways to remove it on your iPhone, from slowest to fastest.
Option 1: The Photos app (start and end only)
- Open the video in Photos and tap Edit.
- Drag the yellow handles to trim the start and end.
- Tap Done.
Limitation: Photos can't remove pauses inside the clip, so it only handles the silence at the edges.
Option 2: A manual editor (precise, but slow)
In editors like CapCut, iMovie or Edits:
- Import your clip and zoom into the timeline.
- Find each pause using the audio waveform.
- Split before and after the pause, then delete it.
- Repeat for every pause in every clip.
Some editors offer a "remove silences" tool, but you still have to arrange and review the clips yourself.
Option 3: Automatically with AI (fastest)
With cutzio:
- Open cutzio and select your clips (up to 15, 15 minutes total).
- Choose Fast Jump to remove every pause, or Cut the Fluff to also remove "um"s, retakes and tangents.
- Wait about 2–3 minutes.
- Get a Short cut and a Full cut, both without dead air, plus captions to post.
Unlike simple silence detection, cutzio understands what's in your footage. Silent but meaningful shots (B-roll like a sizzling pan or a view) are kept, not cut as silence.
Tips to reduce dead air when filming
- Know your first line before you hit record.
- Pause clearly between takes so cuts are clean.
- Film shorter clips. They're easier to trim than one long take.
Frequently asked questions
Can the iPhone Photos app remove silence from a video?
Not automatically. The Photos app can only trim the start and end of a clip. To remove pauses in the middle, you need a video editor. Manual editors make you split and delete each pause, while AI editors like cutzio do it automatically.
What's the difference between removing silence and removing filler words?
Removing silence cuts the gaps where nothing is said. Removing filler words cuts words like "um" and "you know", plus false starts. cutzio's Fast Jump focuses on silences, and Cut the Fluff focuses on filler and retakes.
